Born in South Australia Angus has early memories of fishing for Bream in the Glenelg River with his Grandparents and hearing their stories of massive Jew fish caught from their “Shack”. The Bream were plentiful but unfortunately the Jewfish eluded him. The rod Angus used was a Jarvis Walker “Bonnie Doon” that he received for his fifth birthday, he still has it, although it is a bit shorter now, has had most guides replaced and has been fused together for twenty years.

At age nine the family moved to the Gold Coast and Angus was let loose on the local canals and the Broadwater. Memories of primary school were of preparing rigs during class to use that afternoon, and still passing maths! Ern Grant's Guide to Fishes was more read than school books.

After several years of soaking yabbies and dead pilchards in the canals Angus decided to use bigger baits and bigger hooks and was soon being “monstered” by beasts unknown. A steady stream of large Trevally, Cod and other scaly critters were soon landing on the jetty.

Then came the big revelation, that lures do work. Fishing for Bream with Stumpjumpers and Slices being smashed by Trevally, Queenfish, Barracuda and others as the slice was ripped across the surface at high speed.

The Fly Fishing bug had bitten but it was a daunting proposition trying to decipher the codes of rod weights and line sizes and sink weights. By chance Angus stumbled across Desi Welch tying flies at the local tackle store and was soon hooked on tying.

Armed with a box of flies it was decided that the Northern Territory would be the place to field test them and so began a near annual trek to the Territory.

Domestic and overseas conferences were ideal opportunities to fish and explore new regions.

Joining the South East Qld Fly Fishers Inc. was a great way to extend Angus's interest in and appreciation of this new found sport.
